A History Behind Animal Print.
Animal print has always been popular in Fashion. Its history goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt, all the way through to the Roman Empire, 17th Century England, and Old Hollywood to this present day, so it’s safe to say animal print is and has been very important. In the beginning, animal prints were worn by Kings and Queens to show wealth, status and the power of a nation. (just think of the film ‘Coming to America’). Hunters also believed that the animal print of any animal would give them the power of that certain animal. e.g. the speed of a cheetah.
Animal Print in Fashion…
There was a huge rise in Animal Print in the 30s with the release of the film ‘Tarzan the Apeman.’ The main characters,
Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane were clothed in Animal Prints, This caught the eye of mainstream audiences and increased the demand for Animal Printed clothing. Designers and manufacturers began to produce Animal Printed garments including blouses, scares, coats, hats etc.
In the 40s, Betty Paige dressed in a leopard mini dress which created quite a stir in Fashion and this then increased the trend with Christian Dior’s 1947 collection which was inspired by Animal Print, more specifically, leopard print. This printed collection introduced a whole new era for Animal Print and Dior’s famous slogan was, ‘If you’re fair and sweet, don’t wear it.’ (I love this quote).
Animal Print boomed again in the 60s when the hippie movement was in full flow and again in the ’70s when rockstars wore Animal Print as a show of power. It was everywhere from jumpsuits to underwear, shoes, trousers and dresses. New Animal Prints were introduced to the mainstream in the 80s with zebra prints and snake prints becoming popular. In today’s culture, there are many different prints and most people have a piece of Animal Print in their wardrobe, whether it’s an accessory piece, a piece of clothing or some lingerie!
